TRURO MAN DIES OF GUNSHOT WOUND

Note Indicates Harry Helms Took Own Life There Friday

Harry E. Helms, Truro cafe owner, was found dead in his car near Truro last Friday. Death had resulted from a gunshot wound in the chest.

The death was investigated by Sheriff Rex Rouse and Dr. Paul Eggleston, Madison county medical examiner. After a farewell note had been found, the death was officially reported as a suicide.

Mr. Helms was 50 years of age. He was a native of Dawson, where he was born March 31, 1912, a son of Jess and Della Orman Helms. He was a member of the United Brethren church at Dawson.

He was married at Dawson in 1931 to Thelma Torbett, who survives him. They had lived at Truro the last 14 years.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis N. Miner of Truro; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Helms of Perry; five grandchildren; and a brother, Russell Helms of Perry.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Kale Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Millard Marshall. Burial was made in Hartman cemetery near Truro.

Harry Edwin Helms, son of Jess and Della Orman Helms, was born March 31, 1912, at Dawson, Iowa and passed away at Truro, March 1, 1963, at the age of 50 years and 11 months. He lived the early years of his life at Dawson, attending school, and joining the United Brethren Church.

On Oct. 29, 1931, he was united in marriage to Thelma Torbett. To this union one daughter, Phyllis Nadine, was born.

In 1949, Harry moved with his family to Madison county, continuing his work on a farm, and as a mechanic, and later operating the Truro Café.

Surviving to mourn his loss are his wife, Thelma; his daughter, Phyllis Nadine Miner; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Helms of Perry; one brother, Russell, of Perry, and five grandchildren of Truro.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Millard Marshall at Kale’s Funeral Home Monday afternoon with interment at Hartman cemetery.
