Joseph Heizer, Th.D., San Francisco, Calif.

Joseph John Heizer, 69, died November 4, 1987, in his home at 1516 Masonic Ave., San Francisco, where he had resided for the past 35 years since 1952.

Interment will take place Thursday, November 12 at Lorimor, Iowa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. in the Presbyterian Church of Winterset, which was pastored by his grandfather, the Rev. Alexander McLean Heizer, beginning in 1864.

Dr. Heizer was born May 28, 1918, fourth child of Rev. Forest Alexander Heizer and Luella Means Heizer, while his father pastored the Presbyterian Church of LuVerne, Iowa.

He was an honor student at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. After an interim of two years on the Seattle times he completed work for his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Washington, Seattle.

He did graduate work at San Francisco (Presbyterian) Theological Seminary, San Anselmo, California, and at Westminster (Orthodox Presbyterian) Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. In the latter place he was licensed to preach by Dr. James Kirkland, pastor of Union Baptist church home of Marian Anderson.

He also served an internship with his father in Essex, Iowa, Presbyterian Church and was ordained by Dr. James Pearson of the Association of Fundamental Ministers and Churches, Shenandoah, Iowa on May 30, 1946.

He worked for some years with a subsidiary of Standard Oil of California, during which time his widowed mother lived with him. He retired in 1960 to manage family propery in Iowa, Kansas and California.

Survivors include his niece Alice Upchurch-Craighead of Fort Worth; nieces Valerie Mustoe-Skovath of Pleasanton, Calif., Carol Dillman of Raleigh, N.C., and Martha Mason of Virginia Beach, Va.

Other survivors include cousins Fay & Calvin Schutz, Macksburg, Ia.; Fern Shearer & Esther Varley, Macksburg, Ia., and Marie Groomes, Menlo, Ia.
