JOE PROHASKA IS SUDDENLY CALLED

Heart Failure Causes Death of Long-time Earlham Resident at 71 years.

Joseph Prohaska who has been a highly respected resident of this community for many years, died Friday evening after a severe illness that lasted only a few hours. Mr. Prohaska's death was due to heart failure, a malady from which he had been a slight sufferer for a few weeks. On Thursday he had been up and about his work as usual, the fatal attack striking during the hours of Thursday night.

Funeral services were conducted from the Prohaska home at two o'clock Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Bigelow, of Adel, officiating. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery. The following obituary was read:

OBITUARY

Joseph Prohaska, the oldest in the family of ten children of Paul and Antonia Prohaska was born in Moravia, then a province of Austria, February 25, 1861.

With his parents he came to America in 1868. This journey made a lasting impression on the lad of seven, and remained a source of pride to the mature man. His father a poor man from central Europe, with his wife and four children started for the New World, not having any money for passage. He obtained a position as carpenter on a slow sailing vessel of two generations ago. They were several months at sea. Death occurred with burial in the ocean. Whales were often seen. Many hardships were endured. After landing in Baltimore, their great chest of family belongings was left in storage until funds could be sent for its transportation. Then work was abundant, and they made their way to Iowa. After four years, the Prohaska home was established on a farm bought three and a half miles east of Earlham, where Joseph grew to manhood.

On December 28, 1888 he was married to Carrie Huston at Inland, Iowa. Most of their married life has been spent in Earlham or vicinity. To them were born eight children, Dan, Albert, Mary Trustee, Hattie Davis, Edith who died in infancy, Emma, Nora Voshell, and Vergie, all of Earlham.

In 1923, under the ministry of M. B. Pringle, Joseph Prohaska united with the Church of Christ, as did his entire family.

Mr. Prohaska spent the most of his life as a farmer, but the last nine years has had a position of trust with the Hawkeye Cement Company.

Of splendid physique, it seemed that many years of service were before him, but as a thief in the night, the summons to life over there came March 11, 1932, after only a day's illness. We say his life consisted of 71 years and 16 days, but eternity alone can tell the story.

He leaves to mourn their loss his widow and seven children, eight grandchildren, four brothers, Anthony, of De Soto; Frank, John and Charlie, and one sister Mrs. Mary Mleynek, of Earlham, several nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends.
