Doug Hawley, Johnston

Doug Hawley, 43, of Johnston died Sept. 11, 2001 of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 14, at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines. A second service was held Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Belmond United Methodist Church. Burial was at Belmond Cemetery.

Doug Hawley was born March 20, 1958, to Rex and June (Greenfield) Hawley of Belmond. A graduate of Belmond High School, he also was a graduate of Simpson College in Indianola. He lived most of his life in the Des Moines area. In addition to Belmond and Des Moines areas, he had resided in Winterset from 1995 to 1997 and Omaha, Neb., from 1997 to 1999. He had been employed as an actor and a salesperson for the printing industry. He was named Salesperson of the Year for Data Documents three different times. Doug also was a former executive director of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. As an actor, he participated in various movies, shows, videos, commercials, training films and voice overs. He also was a graduate of Clown College. He received the Best Actor Award from the Iowa Film Awards and was past president of the Iowa Motion Picture Association. He also received the Iowa Motion Picture President's Award and a Governor's Proclamation for the 2001 Personal Achievement Award for MDA. He had been selected to carry the Olympic torch in January of 2002. He was a member of Point of Grace Church and Mid Iowa ALS Support Group.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

He is survived by two daughters, Jessica Hawley of Iowa City and Sara Hawley of West Des Moines; life partner, Susie Keck of Johnston; three stepchildren, Lizzie, Dan and Allie Meyer of Johnston; and three brothers, Kenneth R. Hawley and Ricky A. Hawley (wife Mary) both of Belmond, and Larry L. Hawley (wife Kay) of Sioux Falls, S.D.
