Richard “Dick” Merle Waters, 87, of Corning died March 22, 2005, at Alegent Health-Mercy Hospital in Corning.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 25, at Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service in Corning with military rites performed by American Legion Ourcq Post 117 of Corning. Inurnment of the cremains will take place at a later date.

Dick Waters was born in Minburn to Ralph and Mabel Waters. He resided in Winterset from 1947 to 1956. In 1967, he moved to Corning. Dick was a high school principal at Cumberland-Massena and Corning and athletic director and principal at Woodward State Hospital School, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Corning American Legion, Lions Club of Winterset and Massena and Winterset Methodist churches. He also served in the United States Army Medical Corp during World War II.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Bruce, Lowell, Gene, Lawrence and Darrell Waters; and a sister, LaVilla Bates.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Arlene Waters of Corning; four daughters, Kayla Harney of Woodward, Vicki Goldsmith of Tucson, Ariz., Sue Brawe of Nebraska City, Neb., and Sheila Turnis of Corning; two sons, Craig Waters of Lorimor and Don Wells of Corning; two sisters, Barbara Scavo of Des Moines and Joan Purcell of Altoona; and 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
