Louise Hartzler, Earlham

A prayer service was held Thursday, May 20, in the home of Louise Hartzler of Earlham, who died there on May 18. She was 67 years old.

Born in Parma, Idaho, on Nov. 21, 1914, she was the daughter of Frank and Alice Hartzler. She moved to Earlham in the early 1920s when her parents bought a home there and opened a jewelry store.

She attended Earlham High School and later graduated from Simpson College in Indianola. She taught classes at Earlham High School before she was married. She then moved to California where she raised three children and continued teaching.

While working toward her Master's degree in Special Education, she taught retarded and handicapped children. She retired from teaching in 1971 and returned to Earlham to care for her mother.

She was active in the local Garden Club, Presbyterian church and a member of the Madison County Conservation Board.

She is survived by her children, Louis Hays of Winterset, Frank Kukula of Pacifica, Calif.; and Angela Kukula of Palo Alto, Calif.; 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Rev. Gladys Priest officiated at the prayer service and burial was in Indianola Cemetery.

It is requested that memorial contributions be made to either the Madison County Conservation Board or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Louise Hartzler, the daughter of Frank and Alice Barker Hartzler, was born November 20, 1914 in Parma, Idaho. She passed away at her home in Earlham, Iowa on May 18, 1982.

As a child, Louise moved to the Earlham community with her family. She graduated from Earlham High School in 1932. She received a bachelors degree in home economics from Simpson College and later a Masters degree in Special Education from San Francisco State University.

Louise taught home economics in Earlham for several years, and then taught special education in Pacifica, California for 20 years. In 1971 she moved back to Earlham and has made her home there until the time of her death.

Art and flowers gave Louise great pleasure. She was also actively involved in the conservation movement.

Survivors include two sons, Louis H. Hays of Winterset and Frank J. Kukula of Pacifica, California; one daughter, Mrs. Angela A. H. Kukula of Palo Alto, California; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation and a prayer service was held at her home in Earlham Thursday, May 20, 1982. Graveside services were held at I.O.O. F. Cemetery in Indianola Friday, May 21, 1982. The Rev. Gladys P. Priest officiated. Casket bearers were Edwin Barker, Hugh Barker, Jack Barker, Darwin Barnett, Louis Hays, Frank J. Kukula, Paul Sockwell.
