Wednesday, November 1, 1967Pfc. Don C. Harrell, 19, of Winterset was killed in action in Vietnam on Oct. 25, according to notification received here last Thursday by his mother, Mrs. Carrie Harrell of Winterset.
Private Harrell had been wounded in action about a month ago, and was in a military hospital for at least two weeks at that time.
The young soldier was a graduate of Winterset High School with the class of 1966 and had entered military service last Feb. 22. He arrived in Vietnam about the first of August, and had been serving as driver of an armored personnel carrier with the 4th Infantry division.
He was the third Madison county soldier who has made the supreme sacrifice in the Vietnamese war. The first to die was Sgt. William Bass of Winterset on Nov. 17, 1965. The second was Warrant Officer Don Harger of Truro on Aug. 17 of this year.
Don Clair Harrell was a son of Charles and Carrie Duff Harrell. He was born in Winterset March 29, 1948, and spent his life in this community.
His father preceded him in death. In addition to his mother, he leaves four brothers, Larry Harrell of Santa Monica, Calif., Edgar Harrell of Newport News, Va., Howard Harrell of Winterset and David Harrell at home.
The body of the young soldier is now enroute home. Memorial services and burial will be held at Winterset, with the time and place to be announced.
