Mrs. A. R. Cumpston Dies

Mrs. A. R. Cumpston who has been seriously ill for several weeks died at the Winterset hospital, Saturday evening, July 25th. Mrs. Cumpston who had made her home in the Pitzer neighborhood for a number of years, was 76 years of age.

The deceased who was the former Matilda Nicholson, was born in Johnson county, and was married to Joseph Jerome DeVault, at Lisbon, October 25, 1879. The couple came to this county, and established their home on a farm at Pitzer, where they resided for 42 years. Mr. DeVault died in 1922 and two of the children have preceded her in death, George and Ralph.

In September 1924, she was married to A. R. Cumpston, and they made their home at Longton, Kansas, for five years, and then they returned to the DeVault farm at Pitzer.

Mrs. Cumpston is survived by her husband, and two children, Grover DeVault of Chicago, and Mrs. Ralph Crouse of Winterset.

The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted her funeral services, at the Methodist church Monday, July 27th, at 2:30 o’clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Matilda Nicholson

Matilda Nicholson, daughter of Henry and Maria Nicholson, one of a family of eleven children, was born in Johnson County, Iowa, near Solon, September 14, 1855, and was called to her final home on Saturday, July 25, 1931.

On October 25, 1879 she was united in marriage to Joseph Jerome DeVault at Lisbon, Iowa. They established their home on a farm at Pitzer, Iowa; where they lived for a period of more than forty-two years rearing their family. Here were born to them four children, George W., Ralph J., Grover G., and Lois R.

She was preceded by the husband who passed away in 1922, George W. who was taken in infancy and Ralph J., who was called at the age of thirty-eight.

September 8, 1924, Matilda Nicholson DeVault was married to A. R. Cumpston. They made their home at Longton, Kansas, for five years when they moved to the DeVault farm at Pitzer, where they lived until death claimed her.

There are left to mourn her passing her husband, A. R. Cumpston, the son Grover G. DeVault of Chicago, the daughter Lois R. Crouse of Winterset, five grand children, many other relatives, and a host of friends.
