Death of Mrs. George Grout

Mrs. George Grout, a pioneer resident of Winterset, and Madison county, died at the Winterset hospital Friday morning, September 25th, at the age of 74 years. It is thought that Mrs. Grout had a slight stroke on Monday, September 21st, and this caused her to fall and break her hip. Mrs. Grout had been residing with her daughter, Mrs. Worth Alexander, and she was taken to the Winterset hospital for treatment. All possible care was given her, but she continued to grow weaker, and she died a few days later.

Mrs. Grout was the former Miss Luella Compton, and was born at Carlisle, but came to Winterset in 1862, with her parents. Her father Joseph Compton operated the Buffalo Flour Mills, just south of Winterset, for a number of years. She was married to George M. Grout in 1878 and they lived on a farm in Scott township until 1907 when they came to Winterset. Mr. Grout died in 1919. Mrs. Grout leaves five children: Mrs. Grace Blake, Ray Nelson Grout, Mrs. Elsie Alexander and DeLos Grout of Winterset, and Walter of Sioux falls, South Dakota.

The Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church, conducted her funeral services, Sunday afternoon, September 27th, at Ramsey Richards funeral home at 3 o’clock and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. More details of her life will be given in the mortuary column.
