LEMA WEAVER, Nevada

Lema Mae Weaver, 92, of Nevada, died of heart failure Dec. 13, 1995 at the Story County Hospital Long-Term Care Center in Nevada. Funeral services were Dec. 16 at the Primitive Baptist Church in Winterset. Pastor Pat Sokoll and Elder Larry Pearl officiated the services. Burial was at the Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Winterset.

She was born July 20, 1903 in Madison County to Charles M. and Nellie (Smith) Weaver. She was a retired owner of three restaurants in Chicago. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Winterset; and a former member of the Ames Women's Club. During WW II, she was called to Washington, D.C., to assist in food planning and following retirement, she wrote articles for the American Restaurant Magazine. In Chicago, she worked for the YMCA, managing the food department for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving relatives include one brother, Calvin Weaver of Ames.

Lema Mae Weaver, 92, of Nevada, died Wednesday at Story County Long Term Care Facility in Nevada of heart failure. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Primitive Baptist Church in Winterset, with the Rev. Pat Sokoll of the Great Commission Church in Ames officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Lema Mae Weaver was born in Madison County to Charles M. and Nellie (Smith) Weaver. She was a graduated of Winterset High School and received a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition from Iowa State University in 1928. Miss Weaver lived in Chicago from 1929 to 1948, when she moved to Ames.

In Chicago, Miss Weaver worked for the YMCA, managing the food department until 1942. She owned three restaurants in Chicago before retiring in 1948. During her time in Chicago, ISU sent students to train under her. In World War II, she was called to Washington, D. C., to assist in food planning. Following retirement, Miss Weaver wrote for American Restaurant magazine.

Miss Weaver is survived by one brother, Calvin Weaver of Ames.

Visitation will be Friday at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. The family will be present from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of Iowa Chapter, Alzheimer’s’s Association.
