Ernest Cleveland Hamilton

Ernest Cleveland Hamilton, the eldest son of Joseph Ernest Hamilton and Catherine Dick Hamilton, was born on a farm near Peru in Madison county on August 1, 1889. His early education was acquired in the rural schools and in the public schools in Winterset where he moved with his parents and his two brothers, Frank and Clair, when he was 12 years of age. After graduation from the Winterset high school in June of 1910, he entered the State University of Iowa from which he graduated with the Class of 1914, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts. As a boy and while in college, he participated in all forms of athletics, especially in baseball and football.

After completing his course at the State University he became associated with his father in the real estate and Farm Loan Business and has since that time been a member of the firm. He has been active in public affairs, as well as in politics and served for several years as Chairman of the Democratic County Central Committee. He was appointed a member of the State Board of parole on June 15, 1924, and served on that board for a period of six years, the last two years of which he was chairman of the Board.

In 1917 Ernest enlisted in the Aviation Corps in the United States Army in which he served until received his Honorable discharge in February 1919.

On September 30, 1919, he was united in marriage with Miss Harriet Louise Rhyno, who was also born in Madison county. They were blessed with a son, Ernest Cordell Hamilton, born January 8, 1925.

Ernest has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Winterset since his early childhood. While in college he was affiliated with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was also a Master Mason, a Shriner and a member of Green-Rogers Post of the American Legion.

Ernest departed this life on October 20th, 1931, at the age of 42, 2 months and 19 days. Besides his wife and son, he leaves his father, mother, two brothers, many other relatives and a world of friends.

Death of Ernest C. Hamilton

Word was received here Tuesday afternoon, October 20th of the death of Ernest C. Hamilton, at Mount Pleasant. Mr. Hamilton, who was 42 years of age, had a cerebral hemorrhage, which caused his death.

The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hamilton, and was born, on the home farm, near Peru August 1, 1889. A few years later they moved to Winterset, where they have since resided. Mr. Hamilton was graduated from the Winterset high school in 1910 and then entered the State University of Iowa, at Iowa City. He received his B. A. degree, and was graduated from the University in 1914. He took part in the athletic activities and was a member of both the football and baseball teams. While he was in college, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Following the completion of his education, he returned to Winterset and was engaged in the real estate business, with his father.

He served in the World War, and was a member of the Masonic lodge and Za Ga Zig chapter of the Shrine.

September 30, 1919, he was married to Miss Louise Rhyno, who with the son Cordell survive him. Mr. Hamilton was the democratic member of the Board of Parole, being appointed by Governor N. E. Kendall, and served in this office for six years. Since then he has been in the real estate business.

The Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church is conducting his funeral service at 2:30 this afternoon (Thursday) at the J. E. Hamilton home on West Jefferson street, and burial will be in the Winterset cemetery. Mr. Hamilton also leaves his parents, two brothers, Frank and Clair and an uncle S. M. Hamilton, all of Winterset.
