Oldest Resident of Madison County, Died at Home Near Patterson Sunday
John Cutler, the oldest resident of Madison county, who would have reached his one hundredth birth March 11, died early Sunday morning, at his farm home near Patterson. He died after a day's illness.
The Rev. M. V. Dugan, pastor of the St. Patrick's Catholic church in Lee township, conducted his services Wednesday morning, February 3, at 10 o'clock; and burial was made in the cemetery, near the church.
The surviving children, are George and Ellen at home, John, James and Miss Jewel Cutler of Des Moines, and Mrs. Joseph Morris of Patterson.
Mr. Cutler was born in King's county, Ireland, March 11, 1832, and came to this country when 20 years of age. He landed at New Orleans, February 6, 1852, the trip taking nearly eight weeks. That spring he came to Iowa, arriving at Churchville, April 2, 1852. He worked in Warren county for five years, and took out his naturalization papers at Fort Des Moines in September 1856. In the spring of 1866 he was married to Mary McDonnell, and they moved to Madison County, and for the past 57 years, have resided on the home place in Crawford township.

John Cutler, 99 Years Old, Dies in Crawford Township. 100 In March
John Cutler, 99 years old, and by several years the oldest person in Madison county, died Sunday morning. If Mr. Cutler had lived until March 11, he would have reached the century mark.
Mr. Cutler was born in Kings county, Ireland, march 11, 1832. He came to this country at 20 years of age, landing at New Orleans in February, 1852, after spending nearly eight weeks on the voyage.
In April of the same year he came to Churchville in Warren county for five or six years and took out his naturalization papers at Fort Des Moines in September, 1856.
During the Civil war, Mr. Cutler served as government employee on a freighter hauling supplies on the Mississippi river from various points between Keokuk and New Orleans. After the war he returned to Warren county and was married in the spring of 1866 to Mary McDonnell.
The Cutlers moved to Madison county the same spring, living on two different farms before moving to the farm which was his home at the time of his death. He lived on this farm in Crawford township, north of Patterson, Madison county, for fifty-five years.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s Catholic church, Irish settlement in Madison county, Wednesday morning. Burial will be in the cemetery there.
