Earlham Echo - Thursday, July 17, 1975

Gladys Mae Nolte, daughter of Thomas Christopher and Philena G. Nolte was born December 16, 1894 at Earlham, Iowa. She passed away July 6, 1975 at Des Moines General Hospital after having hip surgery. This came as a complete shock to her family and friends as she seemed to be improving so well.

Gladys grew up in Earlham and Dexter communities, graduated from Dexter high school and later took a special course in sewing, which gave her great pleasure.

In 1914 she married Fred Francis Fouts. They lived in Akron, Colorado and Saginaw, Michigan. In March 1934 moved to Des Moines to be near her father during his last illness.

They became the parents of four children, Frances Price and Helen Ellett of Des Moines, Iowa and Margaret Campbell of Roy, Utah. A son Delmar passed away in 1961.

She was a clerk for J. C. Penney Co. before she married Alfred H. Palmer in June 1974(this could be a typo) giving her two step-children, Mrs. Eugene (Shirley) Corkrean of Winterset, Iowa and Bill Palmer of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In 1948 they moved to Earlham to care for her mother who became blind and passed away in their home in 1956.

She was a birthright member of the Friends Church and a member of the Friendly Circle group. She was a clerk for Cooper's Variety store several years before retirement. Her greatest enjoyment was being with her relatives and friends.

She leaves to mourn her departure, her loving husband, Al; three daughters, a daughter-in-law, Thelma Fouts, the two step-children, one niece, Mrs. George (Pauline) Mills, eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and eleven step grandchildren. One brother and one grandson preceeded her in death.

Last rites were held at the Friends Church in Earlham on July 9 at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverand Glenn Moore officiating. Interment at Earlham. Evans-McKee Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
