In the early hours of Thursday morning, October 18, 1945, Dr. N. E. Gubser, prominent citizen of Earlham and widely known throughout the state in the Veterinary Profession, after three weeks illness with a heart ailment, passed to his eternal reward at the age of 56 years, 11 months and two days.

Nicholas E. Gubser, son of Edward and Katherine Gubser, was born in Clinton county, Illinois, November 16, 1888. He attended public schools in Illinois and was graduated from the Chicago Veterinary College in 1911. Immediately after graduation he located in Earlham, to practice his profession to which he devoted his life's energy. Successful in his work, he was active even when failing eyesight in recent years might have been cause for retirement in one who was less ambitious.

Dr. Gubser was married on July 5, 1911, to Eva L. Hall of Lacona, Iowa. To this union was born one son, Lt. Darwin E. who is now serving in the armed forces. He is survived by his wife, Eva L.; son, Darwin E. and wife, Betty J. and a granddaughter, Sherry Jean; his mother, Katherine Gubser of Greenville, Illinois; three brothers, Henry J. of Jerseyville, Illinois; Walter J. of Alton, Illinois; and Karl H. of Adel, Iowa, with their families. Preceding him in death were his father and two sisters, Barbara and Elnora.

Dr. Gubser was an active member of Madison Lodge A.F. and A.M. No. 568 and of the Iowa Veterinary Association. His most loyal friends were among those who knew him best--his patrons whom he served conscientously and untiringly, his neighbors, his lodge associates and all others who ever met "Doc" Gubser. Always considerate of his family to whom he was devoted, generous in his contributions to religious and civic organizations, such a character needs no lengthy eulogy since his life is exemplified by the thought in the poem, "The House By The Side Of The Road" by Foss.

Funeral rites were held Saturday afternoon, October 20, 2:30 p.m. in the Presbyterian church, Rev. S. R. Overholser, officiating. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
