Marie Groomes, 84, of Des Moines, died April 12, 1996 at Genesis East Hospital in Davenport. Funeral services were April 15 at United Methodist Church in Menlo. The Rev. Robert and Helen Farr officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Bernie Colorado. Interment was at Menlo Cemetery.
She was born June 17, 1911 near Macksburg, to Calvin Curtis and Bertha (Means) Schutz. She married Glen Ivor Wood. She later married Franklin Groomes on June 26, 1966. She was a teacher for 37 years and had taught at Zion, Macksburg and Orient. She retired from her teaching career in 1976 after teaching for 10 years at Stuart-Menlo. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and frequently attended the School of Mission. She participated in many Lay Witness Missions in several states, South Africa, Hawaii and India. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, Frederated Women's club, A-O-KIYA Study Club and her pinochle group.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Franklin; one brother; and one sister.
Surviving relatives include four daughters, Judy Cameron and husband Richard of Des Moines, Beverly Eyerly and husband Gary of Des Moines, Janet Carlson and husband Ernest of Centerville, Ohio, and Barbara Buckles and husband Ken of Bettendorf; one stepdaughter, Virginia Toenes and husband George of Westfield, N.J.; one sister Fern Shearer of Panora; one brother, Calvin Schutz of Macksburg; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
