February 1981Services Held For Franklin Groomes
Funeral services were conducted Jan. 31 at the Menlo United Methodist Church for R. Franklin Groomes, who died Jan. 28 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 83 years old.
Mr. Groomes was born July 8, 1897 in Menlo, Iowa. He was the son of Richard Franklin and Anna Genung Groomes.
He graduated from Menlo High School and then attended Simpson College in Indianola.
On June 1, 1922 he married Mary Lillian Varley and began a career in farming and cattle breeding.
Mr. Groomes and wife Mary were married 42 years before she passed away in 1964, leaving one daughter and three grandchildren.
In 1966, Mr. Groomes was united in marriage to Marie Shutz Wood, adding four daughters and 12 grandchildren to his family circil. Marie Wood Groomes was a Macksburg high school teacher for 22 years.
Mr. Groomes was a member of the Lions Club, Sunday school teacher and member of the Menlo Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, brother Edmund and an infant sister.
Surviving are his wife Marie; five daughters; and 15 grandchildren.
Interment was in Menlo Cemetery, Menlo, Iowa.
