RUTH WENGER, Minnesota

Ruth M. Wenger, 97, of Owatonna, Minn., died Feb. 7, 2005 at Cedaraview Care Center.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Owatonna with the Rev. Pat Hinker officiating.

Ruth Wenger was born July 29, 1907, in Winterset to Lloyd and Ada (Easter) McCorkle, and, as a child, attended Maple Grove Country School in Madison County. She graduated from DeSoto High School in 1924 and later received her music education degree from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On Aug. 27, 1932, she married Harry Wenger. Besides teaching music, Ruth also was an accomplished writer, having published several books. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, 19th Century Club, Owatonna Women's Club and the Owatonna Arts Center. In 1999, she was honored as Owatonna's "Woman of the Century."

She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Hugh McCorkle.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Benjamin of Owatonna, Minn.; one son, Jerry Wenger of Powell, Wyoming; a brother, Paul McCorkle of Sac City; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Michason Funeral Homes in Owatonna.
