Claude Clear, 79, of Afton and formerly of Winterset, died June 20, 2006, at the Afton Care Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 24, at the Afton United Methodist Church with Pastor Joyce Smith officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Claude Clear was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Madison County to Benjamin Martin and Leanna Matilda (Webb) Clear and was a 1945 graduate of DeSoto High School. On Nov. 28, 1946, he married Rosy May Janes in Des Moines. They resided in the Winterset area. Following Rosy’s death in 1985, he later married Lola Louise (Black) Bruette at the Lutheran Church in Winterset in 1986. They resided in Winterset, spending the winters in Harlingen, Texas. Claude, a longtime farmer in Madison County, also was a feed salesman and worked at the Sinclair filling station and Farm Tank wagon service. He also was employed by several other businesses in Winterset — including Montross Pharmacy, Easter’s Market, and Cooper’s Trucking. He retired from Winterset Community Schools as head custodian following 18 years of service.
He was preceded in death by both wives; three brothers, Earl, Guy and Henry Clear; and two sisters, Carrie Kitzerow and Mable Clear.
He is survived by special companion, Audrey Berry of Fairmont, Minn.; one son, Gary Clear of Afton; one daughter, Gayla Clear of Creston; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Afton Walking Trail, East Union Dollars for Scholars or the Afton Care Center.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Powers Funeral Home of Afton and Creston.
