Mrs. Arthur Gowin of Dexter, a former resident of Winterset, died Feb. 22 at Mercedes, Tex., where she and her husband were vacationing this winter. She was 72 years of age.

Mrs. Gowin was the former Marie Ruth, daughter of Alex and Harriet McDonald Ruth. She was born at Muscatine on Sept. 3, 1898. As a child, she came with her family to Winterset, where her early life was spent. As a young woman she taught school in Sioux City, Seattle, Wash., and at Arthur and Ackley in Iowa.

She was married to Arthur Gowin on July 22, 1926, in Chicago, where they lived for three years. They lived in Bettendorf for 25 years before moving to Winterset, and later to Dexter.

Mrs. Gowin served as a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross for many years, with over 7,000 hours of volunteer work in hospitals to her credit.

She was a member of the Kings Daughters in Bettendorf and was active in the Order of Eastern Star, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and the American Legion auxiliary. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church.

Funeral services were held last Thursday from the United Presbyterian church in Dexter with burial in the McDonald cemetery northwest of Winterset.

Marie Gowin, 72 Dies in Texas

DEXTER: Marie Gowin, 72, was found dead by her husband, Art, at their home in Mercedes, Texas Monday morning. They have been staying in Texas for the last few winters. Last rites were conducted at the Presbyterian Church, 1 p.m. at Dexter.

The Gowins returned to Dexter for retirement about three years ago and were living in one of the Dexter Community apartments.

The Gowins had no children, but a sister and brother survives Mrs. Gowin in Winterset.

Marie Ruth, daughter of Alex Ruth and Harriet McDonald Ruth, was born September 3, 1898 at Muscatine, Iowa. While yet a child, she moved with her family to Winterset, Iowa, where she grew to young womanhood. She became a teacher, and taught in Sioux City, Seattle, Wash., and Arthur and Ackley, Iowa.

She was married to Arthur Gowin on July 22, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, where they lived for three years. They lived in Bettendorf, Iowa for 25 years, and then lived in Winterset, Iowa, before moving to Dexter to make their home.

Mrs. Gowin served in the capacity of Volunteer Red Cross worker in Veterans Hospitals in Bettendorf and in Des Moines, having put in some 7,000 hours in such dedication. She was a member of the Kings Daughters organization in Bettendorf and was also very active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the P.E.O., Sisterhood, and the Legion Auxiliary.

Her death came suddenly while vacationing in the South. She was buried in the McDonald cemetery northwest of Winterset following services in the United Presbyterian Church of Dexter, Iowa, February 25, 1971.
