Death Ends Marriage for Van Meter Couple After 71 Years
Mrs. William E. Goodson of Van Meter, a long-time resident of Jefferson township, died Friday, August 6, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. She was 91 years of age.
Mrs. Goodson was the former Nettie Swallow, daughter of George W. and Martha Jane Swallow and was born in Dallas county, Jan. 12, 1874. She was one of the early school teachers in Dallas county, and was a charter member of the Union Chapel Missionary society, remaining active until recent years.
She was married to William E. Goodson on Jan. 11, 1894. They lived for 66 years on the same farm in Jefferson township. They observed their seventy-first wedding anniversary this year.
Mrs. Goodson was the mother of six children, Merrill dying at the age of one year, and LeRoy at six years. She is survived by her husband; a son Roscoe Goodson of Van Meter; three daughters, Mrs. Wilma Robinson and Mrs. Pearle Johnson of Van Meter and Mrs. Mildred Bailey of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Harry Swallow of Booneville; and two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Clayton of Graettinger and Mrs. Josephine Birkland.
