LAURA J. MILLER Dies in California

Former Resident, Daughter of Col. H.J.B. Cummings

Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Laura Cummings Miller, former Winterset resident, at the California P.E.O. home in Alhambra, on Thursday, February 24th, 1938. Mrs. Miller had been at the home since 1934. Several years ago she suffered a stroke and was in serious condition for a long time, but made a remarkable recovery, and for the past several years was in fairly good health. However, she suffered a second stroke February 8th, and a week later lapsed into a coma from which she never regained consciousness.

Mrs. Miller was the widow of James W. Miller, long time newspaper publisher of Winterset. Following his death, about 20 years ago, she moved to Long Beach, and resided there until in 1934.

The deceased was a daughter of the Honorable H.J.B. Cummings, well known pioneer resident of Winterset. He became editor of the Winterset Madisonian in 1869, and was elected to congress from this district in 1876. During the Civil war he was a colonel of the Thirty-ninth Iowa Infantry.

Laura Justine Cummings was raised in Winterset, and on November 23, 1876 she was married to James Winfield Miller. Mr. and Mrs. Miller had two children, but both died in infancy. However Mr. and Mrs. Miller took into their home, Claude C. Cornman who now resides at 1424 Jackson Boulevard, Sioux City, Iowa. He has a son who lives in San Fernando, California.

Mr. and Mrs. Miller were both active members of the Presbyterian church, and other organizations of this community. Mr. Miller was employed at the Madisonian office for a number of years and was later editor of The Reporter.

The services for Mrs. Miller were held Monday, February 28th, at the Mottell Chapel in Long Beach, and the remains were placed in a crypt in the Angles Abbey mausoleum.
