John Gates of Winterset, a retired farmer who had lived in this community for nearly half a century, died Monday at the Shoemaker Nursing home here. He was 92 years of age.

A son of George and Katherine Gates, he was born at Grove Creek, April 30, 1854. His father's family lived in Nebraska for a number of years, and at the age of 22 he came to Iowa, and on Dec. 7, 1879 he was married to Ella Barnett.

Mr. and Mrs. Gates were the parents of two children: Mrs. Julia Bartlett of Webster township and one daughter, Mrs. Addie Helm, who died in 1926. The Gates home was in Webster township until 1919 when they moved to Winterset, and they have since resided on West Jefferson street.

He was a member of the Wells Congregational church, and later became a member of the Church of Christ in Winterset.

He is survived by his aged wife, one daughter, Mrs. Julia Bartlett, one sister, Mrs. Josie Kerns of Martinsville, Mo., one granddaughter, Mrs. Reva Wilson, and two great grandsons.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Winterset Church of Christ, in charge of the Rev. L. F. Davis.

Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
