Laona Goater, Winterset

Blanche Laona (Onie) Goater, 81, of Winterset died Nov. 4, 2004 at her home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 8, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset with Pastor Alex Bauman officiating. Burial was at North McDonald Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Madison County.

Laona Goater was born Sept. 8, 1923 in Madison county to Oliver E. and Blanche L. (Myers) Hendricks.

In 1939 she moved from the Winterset area to Des Moines where she resided until 1957. While living in Des Moines, she was employed in various retail work.

On Dec. 22, 1956, she married Charles L. Goater in New Hampton. They later moved to Eagle Grove. Laona owned and managed Laona's Cafe in Eagle Grove during the 1960s. She also taught cake decorating at Iowa Central Community College and was a painter and writer. Following retirement in 1979, she and her husband moved to Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada, summering there and wintering in Mountain Home, Ark. After her husband's death, she moved to Lake Belle Taine, near Nevis, Minn. She moved back to Madison County in 2001. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, William, Walter and Ralph Hendricks; and two sisters, Ethel Haines and Wilda Stepp Phillips.

She is survived by three stepchildren, Michael Goater of Marion, Gayla Detweiler of Solon and Richard Goater of Goldfield; a sister, Margaret Jones of Winterset; and six grandchildren.
