VERNA C. MONAGHAN, Des Moines

Verna C. Monaghan, 83, passed away on January 16, 2006 at Mercy Hospice Care in Johnston. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church with burial following at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Cumming.

Verna was born December 1, 1922 in Marion, SD and graduated from Mt. Lake High School in Minnesota. She worked for Solar Air Craft during WW II where she met and later married John Monaghan. They were married 54 years before his death in 1998. Verna attended the Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines and opened Highview Beauty Shop at 1405 Highview Drive in Des Moines.

She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and is survived by her sister, Vi Thurmond of Des Moines; her brother, Herbert Tieszen of San Diego, California; her sons, John "Mike" of Des Moines, Jerry of Seattle, WA, and Don of St. Charles; her three grandson, Joel, Jeff and Jammie and three great-grandchildren, Korbi, Matthew and Briana. She was preceded in death by her husband; her sister, Selma Saxton; her brother Ed Tieszen; and sister-in-law, Ellen Tieszen.

The family will greet friends from 6-8 PM Wednesday evening at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, where there will be an 8 PM Rosary service.
