Albert Gilbert, Earlham

Albert L. Gilbert, 96, of Earlham died June 22, 2005, in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 25, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Linda Burnett and Ernie Baiotto officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.

Al Gilbert was born April 11, 1909 to Frank and Evangeline (Riser) Gilbert of rural Earlham. He attended elementary school at Penn Center and graduated from Earlham Community High School. He continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames, receiving a degree in animal husbandry.

Al worked for a number of dairies, formulating and processing various cheeses, ice cream, milk, cream and a variety of other products. He also was a sales representative for Roberts Dairy in Omaha, Neb., developing milk routes.

In July 1940, he and his wife, Rose were married. They eventually returned to the family farm in rural Earlham where he joined his parents in a farming partnership. In addition, he did custom baling throughout the Earlham area. Al was a renowned Red Poll cattle breeder and a member of the Red Poll Cattle Club.

He is survived by his wife, Rose, of Earlham; one son, Larry Gilbert of Highland, Ill.; and one daughter, Rita Disbrow of Newark, Ohio.

EARLHAM—Albert “Al” Gilbert, 96, died Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at Winterest.

Services were held Saturday, June 25 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastors Linda Burnett and Ernie Baiotto officiating. Burial was in the Earlham Cemetery at Earlham.

Soloist Kathy Hopkins sang “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “How Great Thou art.” Special music included “You’re The Nearest Thing To Heaven” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.”

Bearers were Paul Marston, Russ Asman, Marlyn Gilbert, James Stanley, Dan Doherty Jr. and Bruce Koboldt.

Honorary bearers were Wayne Fastle, Harry Skaggs, Steve Hess, Bud Anker, Emil Chloupek, Sandy Ahnen, Gary Gilbert, Peggy Alston, Neal Nekl, Richard Alston and Nick Nekl.

Al was born April 11, 1909 to Frank and Evangeline Riser Gilbert, and was an only child. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Earlham.

He started elementary school at a one-room facility at Penn Center. Eventually a school was built in Earlham and he completed high school at Earlham Community. He continued his education graduating from Iowa State University in Ames in Animal Husbandry.

He worked for a number of dairies, formulating and processing various cheeses, ice cream, milk, cream and a variety of other products.

The height of his career was working for Roberts Dairy in Omaha. He became a sales representative for the company and was assigned the task of developing milk routes. The task was to enable Roberts to purchase milk from farmers in the Nebraska area. He also met his wife while working for the company.

He married Rose Nekl in July 1940 and they had two children, Larry and Rita.

The couple enjoyed ballroom big band dancing and the couple danced to bands at various locations in Nebraska and Iowa. The hobby continued during their retirement at the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines. Another hobby was collecting and selling antiques.

Al was plagued with digestion problems throughout his life. His health deteriorated to the point that he sought the help of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., with a resolution to the problem, thus ending his career in the dairy business. He and Rose returned to the family farm to reside with Al’s parents. He went into a formal partnership with his parents and farmed the 120 acres of land. In addition, he did custom baling throughout the Earlham area for various farmers.

He became a renowned Red Poll cattle breeder, showing cattle at state fairs, as well as developing the line. A bolt of lightning hit the house on the farm causing a huge fire and Al and Rose moved to their present home on the south edge of Earlham.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; two children: Larry and Helen (Tootie) Gilbert of Highland, Ill., and Rita and Michael Disbrow of Newark, Ohio; and other relatives and friends.
