Services for Bertha A. Stanley, 91, a long-time Earlham resident, who died Oct. 4 at a Winterset nursing home, were held on Thursday, Oct. 6 at the McKee Funeral Home, Earlham, with the Rev. Wayne Anson officiating. Burial was at the Earlham Cemetery.

Born Sept. 2, 1892 on a farm near Audubon, she was the daughter of Edwin and Viola Jane Richey Aldrich. When she was a child, the family moved to Stuart where she attended school.

On Mar. 1, 1903, the family moved to a farm north of Earlham known as the Pleasant Hill Community where she attended rural schools. She married Chester Stanley Mar. 4, 1916 and lived on a farm near Winterset.

Survivors include a sister, Margaret Turner of Des Moines; a brother, Lester Aldrich and wife, Lillian, of Stuart.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a son, daughter, sister and two brothers.

Bertha Aldrich, daughter of Edwin and viola Jane Richey Aldrich, was born September 2, 1892 on a farm near Audubon, Iowa in Audubon county. When she was a child the family moved to Stuart, Iowa where she attended school.

On March 1, 1903 the family moved to a farm north of Earlham known as the Pleasant Hill Community where she attended rural schools.

She was united in marriage to Chester W. Stanley March 4, 1916 and lived on a farm near Winterset. Two children were born to this union and neither one was permitted to remain with them long as both passed away in their early years. Jack was born May 14, 1922 and passed away June 13, 1925 at the age of three years. Eileen was born May 4, 1932 and passed away July 18, 1943 at the age of 11 years. Bertha was especially fond of her nieces and nephews and took a great interest in them. They loved her very dearly.

She lived on a farm east of Earlham until after her husband’s death in 1954. She then lived in an apartment in Earlham for several years and later was moved to a nursing home in Winterset where she lived until the time of her death.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a son, a daughter, a sister, Hazel Cook, and two brothers, Forrest and Everett Aldrich.

Survivors include one sister, Margaret Turner, of Des Moines, a brother, Lester Aldrich and wife, Lillian, of Stuart; a sister-in-law, Maud Aldrich, of Adel, many relatives and friends.

Bertha will be kindly remembered as a good homemaker, a loving wife and mother and a friend to all.

“And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Funeral services were conducted October 6, 1983 at the McKee Funeral Home, Earlham, Iowa, with Pastor Wayne Anson officiating. Marie Cook provided organ music. Pallbearers were Ralph Stanley, Jr., Glen Stanley, John Brown, Richard Stanley, Lyle Cook and Jack E. Brown. Interment was in Earlham cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
