WARREN PIATT, Stuart

Warren Allen Piatt, 80, a resident of the Community Care Center in Stuart and former Dexter resident, died March 27, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines of complications from pneumonia.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 31, at the Dexter United Methodist Church with Pastor Kirk Seagren officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery.

Warren Piatt was born Aug. 15, 1924, to Lawrence and Mabel (Henkle) Piatt of rural Earlham. He attended country school, graduating from Earlham High School. On Sept. 6, 1947, he married Gwendolyn Qualley in Hills, Minn. Warren farmed in the Dexter area and was co-owner of Piatt Brothers Elevator in Dexter and Menlo. Following Gwen’s death in 1977, he later married Carol Weesner on July 7, 1983. He was club leader of the Union Pride 4-H Club, a 20-year member of the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Dexter United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gwen, and a brother, Marlin.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Dexter; his children — Keith Piatt and Barbara Piatt Nation, both of Dexter, Janice Piatt Powell of Stuart, Chuck Weesner of Earlham, Cathy Van Hove of Kiester, Minn., and David Weesner of Council Bluffs; a sister, Connie Allen of Osceola; and 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Warren Allen Piatt, 80, died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines of complications from pneumonia. He had been a resident of Community Care Center in Stuart for a year.

Services were held Thursday, March 31 at the United Methodist Church in Dexter with Pastor Kirk Seagren officiating. Burial was in the Penn Center Cemetery at rural Earlham.

Robert Lawson was organist and accompanied the congregation for “Hymn of Promise.”

Bearers were Nathan Powell, Tim Kirkman, Carlos Garcia, Kyle Van Hove, John Weesner, Jeff Weesner, Paul Weesner, Tim Weesner, Matt Weesner, Jason Van Hove and Bryon Weesner. Honorary bearers were Sarah Garcia, Laura Blake, Emily Blake, Natilie Powell, Sandy Stevens, Jim Anker and Brad Allen.

Warren Allen Piatt was born Aug. 15, 1924 to Lawrence and Mabel Henkle Piatt at the family farm south of Earlham. During his childhood he was active in helping his father around the farm and attended country school until the eighth grade.

He attended high school in Earlham and was a member of the football team for all four years. He enjoyed telling his grandchildren of the famous Thanksgiving Day football games between Dexter and Earlham. He was active in 4-H and showed draft horses.

After high school, he married Gwendolyn Qualley on Sept. 6, 1947 in Hills, Minn. They had three children: Keith, Barbara and Janice.

Piatt farmed in the Dexter area and was co-owner of Piatt Brothers Elevator in Dexter and Menlo. He was club leader of the Union Pride 4-H club, a 20-year member of the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Dexter United Methodist Church, serving on several committees.

Following his wife’s death on June 3, 1977, Piatt married Carol Weesner on July 7, 1983 and added three more children into his life, Chuck, Cathy and David.

Piatt loved farming, getting together with his family, making homemade ice cream and cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen, his parent, and a brother, Marlin.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, children Keith and Judy Piatt of Dexter, Barbara and Les Nation of Dexter, Janice and Kevin Powell of Stuart, Chuck Weesner of Earlham, Cathy and Don Van Hove of Kiester, Minn. And David and Cheryl Weesner of Council Bluffs; a sister, Connie and Curtis Allen of Osceola; a nephew, Bradley Allen and Mary of Osceola; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Dexter United Methodist Building Fund.
