Death of William Garrett

The Kearney, Nebr. Democrat records the death on May 11, of William Garrett, the aged father of Miss Sarah Garrett, assistant registrar at the Kearney State Normal. Death came at the age of 92 years at the Garrett home in Fremont.

Mr. Garrett was an educator in the early days of Madison county, possibly being the organizer and teacher of the first school north of Winterset. He came here from Indiana in 1849 with a colony that settled in Lincoln township and made about the first government land entry in Madison township.

In 1851, Mr. Garrett opened a subscription school, but the cabin burned down within a week, but later taught successfully, Rufus Clark, being one of his pupils. Mr. Garrett's primitive school is given special mention in the history of this county.
