WILLIAM F. MARTIN OF WINTERSET DIES

Veteran of Three Wars Had Been in Failing Health in Recent Years

William F. Martin, a resident of Winterset nearly all his life, died at a nursing home here Friday, Jan. 20, at the age of 70 years.

Mr. Martin was born March 1, 1885, in Council Bluffs, a son of Henry and Fransene Martin. Since early childhood he made his home with his uncle, Cain Bishop, and through much of his life was known by the name of Billy Bishop.

At an early age he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served through the Phillippine insurrection. He saw service also through World Wars I and II, receiving a medical discharge from the Navy shortly before the end of World War II.

Since the war, he had been in failing health, and had spent much of his time in recent years as a patient at the Veteran's hospital in Des Moines.

He is survived by a son, John W. Martin, of Anaconda, Mont.

Funeral services were held Monday from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John W. Higgins. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. Members of Green-Rogers post of the American Legion assisted in the services with military ritual.

Coordinator's note: Transcribed as published. William's father's surname was "Martino". It appears that William dropped the "o" from the end of his name and went by "Martin".
