John J. Freeberg, Winterset

John Joseph Freeberg, 75, died September 27, 1993 at VA Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services were held September 30, 1993 at Kale Funeral home in Truro with the Rev. Paul Sandgren of Indianola officiating.

Mr. Freeberg was born August 13, 1918 to Charles and Augusta DeHon Freeberg in Beacon. He married Wanda Mullen of Osceola in Bethany, Mo. on September 5, 1937. He opened his barber shop business in Truro in September of 1937 and in 1964 he started his own insurance agencies in Truro and St. Charles. He served in the Pacific during World War II with the United States Air Force as a radioman/navigator. He was a member of the VFW, the Ivy Masonic Lodge, the Truro Business Association, past-president of the Truro Community Developers and coached little league baseball. He retired to his farm in 1974 and in 1989 moved to Winterset. He volunteered his time and service to the Madison County Historical Society, the Madison County Fair Board and the Democratic Party.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister in infancy.

He is survived by his wife; one sister, Leona Elder and husband Ralph of Walnut; two daughters, Karilee K. Freeberg of South Bend, Ind., and Johnna Jo Ekleberry and husband Don of Truro; one son, Robert E. Freeberg and wife Karla of Keota; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the John Freeberg memorial fund in care of the family or Union State Bank.
