RACHEL M. MILLER, Mason City

Services for Rachel M. Miller, 88, former St. Charles resident, who died Dec. 1, 1983, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, were held Saturday, Dec. 3 at the St. Charles Parish Church with the Rev. Chet Waterman of St. Charles officiating. Burial was at the St. Charles Cemetery.

Born at Hanley, she was the daughter of Austin and Alice Haynes Bishop. She attended St. Charles schools and graduated in 1915. she was married Feb. 13, 1918 at Hanley to Alva Miller.

Mrs. Miller taught at the Hattel country school and lived in St. Charles until a year ago when she moved to live with her daughter. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of St. Charles.

Survivors include daughters, Dorothy Hess and husband George Swaledale and Virginia Leasure and husband William of Des Moines; a son Max Miller and wife Jane of Des Moines, 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a sister, Dorothy Houlette of Maxwell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and two sisters.

Coordinator's note: Per her Iowa Delayed Certificate of Birth, issued in 1942, her full maiden name is "Monnie Rachel Miller". But, starting with her marriage record, she went by Rachel in her adult life. Her gravestone has "Rachel B. Miller", the "B" most likely for her maiden surname.
