Tony M. Feiteira, 80, who was working at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked by the Japanese, died at Madison County Memorial Hospital December 12, 1980, following a cardiac arrest. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, December 17, at 7 p.m. at McKee Funeral Home in Earlham.
"Tony", whose father came from Portugal in the mid 1800's, was born on February 16, 1900 in Hamakuapoko, Maui, the island where he later became an iron blacksmith and foreman at the Hawaiian Cane & Sugar Plantation (HC&S). He married Amelia Victorine-Pazz in 1923 and they had one daughter.
He was employed at the Hilo Ironworks in Hilo, Hawaii before working for the Plantation at Paia and Puunene, Maui, as well as a part-time barber. He received commendations from the United States Navy for his "contribution to winning the second World War" during his employment at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard as an industrial blacksmith for 10 years.
He moved to La Jolla, California in 1950 where he purchased the Elite Bakery, which he operated until his retirement at age 62. He spent the following summers in Earlham with his daughter and family and winters in California and later Phoenix with his granddaughter.
Preceding him death were his wife, his parents, three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Piilani (Lani) Fagen of Earlham; his sister, Mrs. Evelyn Araujo of Hilo, Hawaii; a half-brother, Chris Feiteira of Kahului, Maui; a half-sister, Nellie of the mainland; and four grandchildren, Loren of Denver, Colorado, Laurie of Waterloo, Lex of Vesoul, France and Lee of Mesa, Arizona.
Professional services provided by McKee Funeral Homes of Earlham and Dexter, and cremation by Dunn's Crematory of Des Moines. Burial will be private. A tree will be planted in the spring as a living memorial.
