Funeral services were held Friday, March 8, at the Van Meter United Methodist Church for Mary R. Felter of Van Meter. Mrs. Felter died on Tuesday, March 5, at the age of 80 years.
Mrs. Felter was born on January 8, 1894 on a farm in Mahaska County, the daughter of Alva and Jane Votaw Reynolds. She attended William Penn Academy and College in Oskaloosa and Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Later she earned a master of arts degree in English from the University of Iowa. Before her marriage, she taught English in the Milford, Albia and Oskaloosa high schools.
Mrs. Felter was married to Dr. Allan G. Felter on March 26, 1921 at the home of her parents in Oskaloosa. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Van Meter, where they had lived for the past 53 years.
Mrs. Felter was an active member of the Van Meter Methodist Church, serving as organist for 35 years, as well as teaching Sunday School and participating in the United Methodist Women's fellowship. She was also a member of the local Matron's Club and the Women's Club.
In addition, she was active in women's auxiliary organizations of the Dallas-Guthrie Medical Association, the Polk County Medical Association and the Iowa Medical Association; and was a past-president of the Iowa Medical Association Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Allan G. Felter, and by three daughters; Mrs. Harold (Martha) Cummings, Mrs. Clifford (Mary) Olson and Mrs. Walter (Margaret) Freitag. She is also survvied by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, as well as one sister, Mrs. Lucille Culter.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, at the United Methodist Church in Van Meter with the Rev. Clyde Sparks officiating. Burial was in the Van Meter Cemetery.
