November 2002Mildred Standing, 102, of rural Earlham died of respiratory failure Nov. 21, 2002, at Winterset Care Center South.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 30, at Bear Creek Friends Church of rural Earlham with Karen Mendenhall officiating. The body has been donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date at Bear Creek Cemetery.
Mildred Standing was born Dec. 16, 1899, in the Bear Creek community, Union Township, Dallas County, to John and Smira (Hadley) Mendenhall. On Aug. 23, 1924, she married Bernard Standing at the Bear Creek Friends Church. Most of her life was spent in the Bear Creek area, except for some of her later childhood years when she resided in Oskaloosa where she later attended Penn Academy and Penn College. During her married life, the family farmed at various locations in southwest Dallas County and, for three years, in Adair County, southwest of Casey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sons.
She is survived by two sons, Herbert Standing and John Standing; a daughter, Elsie Standing Kuhn; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
