Orie Lewis Jones, Jr., 79, of Earlham died April 3, 2002.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 6, at Earlham United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dr. Ray Martin and Alberta Ervin officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery with graveside military rites performed by Earlham American Legion Post 158.

Orie Jones was born June 24, 1922, in Dallas County to Orie L. Sr. and Leona (Stary) Jones. On Feb. 20, 1943, he was united in marriage to Berdena Johnson of Adel. He was a United States Army veteran, having servied in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during World War II. Following his Army discharge, he returned to Earlham and began working for the United States Postal Department, retiring in 1980 after 34 years of service as clerk, rural carrier and postmaster. Orie was a member of the Earlham American Legion Post 158, Earlham First Presbyterian Church (trustee and elder), Madison Lodge 568 AF & AM(50 years, master) and the Earlham Chapter of Eastern Star (worthy patron, grand sentinel in 1977 and worthy grand patron in 1981). He also was class marshal emeritus of the Des Moines Consistory and a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Berdena, of Earlham; a son, John Jones of Des Moines, a daughter, Debbie Jones of Earlham; a brother, Robert Jones of Waukee; two sisters, Betty Irving of Stuart and Norma Jean Hougham of Guthrie Center; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
