Death of Harvey B. Fortney

Harvey Bennett Fortney, who came to Truro with Mrs. Fortney several weeks ago, to make their home with F. W. Michener, died at his home, Friday, January 23, at the age of 79 years. Mrs. Fortney is a sister of Mr. Michener, and they came here, upon the death of Mrs. Michener, at the first of the year.

The deceased was born in West Virginia, November 12, 1851, and came to this county, when he was 24 years of age. His marriage to Miss Mattie Michener, was an event of October 22, 1877.

He leaves besides his wife, three sons, Harvey H. Fortney of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Charles E. of Newark, Ohio; and David C. of Gem, Alberta, Canada, and a daughter, Mrs. Emma Sleen of Andale, Kansas. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Josie Garner of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. Dorothy Childs of Fairmont, West Virginia, and Mrs. Mollie Rephart of Tunnelton, West Virginia.

Funeral services were held at Truro, Sunday, and burial was made in the Ebenezer cemetery.

Harvey Bennett Fortney

Harvey Bennett Fortney was born near Newberg, West Virginia, November 12, 1851, and died at the Frank Michener residence near Truro, Iowa, on January 23, 1931, aged 79 years.

When about 24 years of age he came to Iowa and taught in the schools of Mahaska county for a time. On October 22, 1877, he was united in marriage with Mattie J. Michener of New Sharon, Iowa.

Mr. Fortney was deeply interested in religious and political movements, and spent most of his lifetime in teaching in various public schools of Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado.

In early manhood he developed a strong Christian character and united with the Baptist church of which he was a loyal and consistent member.

He leaves behind to mourn his loss, his devoted companion of over fifty years, three sons, Harvey H. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Charles E. of Newark, Ohio, and David C. of Gem, Alberta, Canada, one daughter, Mrs. Emma Sleen of Andale, Kansas, also three sisters, Mrs. Josie Garner, of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. Dorothy Childs, of Fairmont, West Virginia, and Mrs. Wallie Rephart, of Tunnellton, West Virginia.
