MORTUARY

James Madison Clifton

James Madison Clifton, son of Maria Mackey Clifton, was born near Centerville, Appanoose county, Iowa, October 29, 1856 and departed this life at his home in Peru, August 12, 1931, at the age of 74 years, 9 months and 13 days.

When yet a child of about 8 years he came with his parents to Madison county, settling on a farm south east of Peru.

On January 25, 1883, he was united in marriage to Mary McGuire. To this union two children were born: Iella May Davis of Helena, Montana; and Sylvester S. Clifton of Peru, both of whom survive. Mrs. Clifton preceded her husband in death, departing October 1, 1900.

December 20, 1903, Mr. Clifton was again united in marriage to Julia A. DeLong who survives and mourns his death.

Besides the wife, son and daughter, Mr. Clifton is survived by one brother, Charley of Osceola, Iowa; and three sisters, Mrs. M. C. Mease, Truro; Mrs. J. H. Millard, Harvey; Mrs. J. F. Deardorff, Peru; together with a large number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon, August 14, at the home and the Peru church by the Reverend Edwin H. Sands. Interment was in the Ebenezer cemetery.
