The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Row, and was born in Holmes county, Ohio, January 22, 1857. She grew to young womanhood there and taught for a number of years in an academy in Ohio. She visited a sister in Earlham, and there met Mr. DeVault, whom she married. They were the parents of two sons, Charles Arthur and Jonathon Clifford.

Mrs. DeVault was an early member of the Pitzer United Presbyterian church, and was an active worker of the church for 45 years. For four years the family lived in Winterset, and since then they have resided in Jackson township.

Mrs. DeVault has been an invalid the past seven years, and suffered intensely.

Mrs. Hettie DeVault

Hettie, the youngest daughter of Andrew and Susanna Row, was born in Holmes county, Ohio, January 4, 1857. She went to heaven on the morning of April 4, 1931, the next to the last of a family of ten children. She had three brothers and six sisters. The only survivor of the family is Mrs. Catherine Dinshell, who is 83 years of age.

In early womanhood she secured a good education and for some years was principal of an academy of 600 pupils, teaching English and German. These academies were the precursor of the modern high school and junior college. The academy’s (unreadable)…..upon (unreadable)…. in the position of principal, for breadth of interest and general information never can be exceeded by any educational position. Mrs. DeVault responded to these demands with all her soul and this had greatly to do with molding her character and life interest. Always alert about education, upon her invalid bed after five years of suffering, she still kept her mind alert by memorizing the name and position of the capitol, the area in square miles, principal rivers and the population of every state and country in the world.

She came to visit a sister at Earlham and meeting Jasper Strauder DeVault, forsook the teaching profession to be a farmer’s wife. They were married April 8, 1882. Two sons were given them, Charles Arthur and Jonathon Clifford Row. She has four grandchildren, Franz B., San Francisco, Cal.; Jasper Scott, Ruth Iona, and Merla Neoma.

In early girlhood she gave her heart to Jesus. She was raised in the German Reformed church. She transferred to the Jackson Center Union church which later became the Pitzer United Presbyterian, and she labored all her active life with eager, unabated zeal. With Mrs. Annie Appelgate and Samuel Spence, she is among the last survivors of the charter members of Pitzer. She ardently labored for the Kingdom here above 45 years. Except four years spent at Winterset, all her married life has been spent in this community.

The last seven years of her life were spent in affliction. A common but painful combination of arthritis and neuritis of unusual severity laid hold on her body but never conquered her soul. Her pitiful helplessness called for the devotion of her two daughters-in-law, as no woman was ever better served by her own.

The funeral was held at Pitzer at 2 p. m. Monday, April 6, W. C. Porter, her pastor in charge. Burial was in Winterset, beside her husband.
