Sarah Louise Elderkin, 81, of Winterset, died of cancer Nov. 13, 1997 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Funeral services were Nov. 17, at the First Christian Church in Winterset with Pastor Bobby Dickerson and Dr. George Lair officiating. Burial followed at the Winterset Cemetery.
She was born in Webster Township, Madison County, on Nov. 24, 1915 to Charles Hamer and Rebecca Myrtle (Denney) Busch. She was a 1934 graduate of Winterset High School and received her certificate in normal training from Simpson College in 1938. She taught for six years in the elementary and country schools of Madison County and worked for the 842nd Army Air Depot during World War II. She married Frank Elderkin on May 30, 1942 in Brownwood, Texas at the Church of Christ Parsonage. She was a farm wife and mother for several years while living in Macksburg, and she and her husband later moved to Winterset in 1982. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Winterset, the Crown Rebekah Lodge #360, Past Noble Grand Club, Christian Women's Fellowship, Good Neightbor Club, Friendly Circle Club, Current Topic Club and volunteered at the Madison County Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and two brothers.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Donna Young and husband Ronald of Flora, Ill.; two sons, Frank C. Elderkin and wife Melinda of Bowling Green, Ky., Gary W. Elderkin and wife Karen of Winterset; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several cousins and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Middle River Hospice, the Madison County Historical Society or the First Christian Church.
