Verlyn Loyal Gilbert, 87, of Dayton, Nev., died of a heart attack Feb. 22, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 1, at the Earlham Church of Christ with Pastor Steve Allison officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.

Verlyn Gilbert was born Feb. 4, 1915, to Loyal and Della (Dunbar) Gilbert of rural Earlham. A 1932 graduate of Earlham High School, he married Margaret Graves on July 16, 1939, in Unionville, Mo. Verlyn was a self-employed contractor for several years in the Earlham area. In 1968, he and Margaret moved to Dayton where he began work with the Nevada Forestry Service in maintenance. He retired in 1981. He was actively involved in the Church of Christ in Earlham and the Baptist Church in Carson City, Nev.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son and a brother.

He is survived by a son, Gary Gilbert (wife LuAnn) of Des Moines; two daughters, Deanna French (husband Ken) of Crawford, Colo., and Judy Anderson (husband Kim) of Huron, S.D.; a brother, Marlyn Gilbert (wife Bert) of Earlham; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
