Death of Mrs. Roscoe Eyerly

Mrs. Alice Griswold Eyerly's death in Groton, Mass., last Friday morning, brought great grief to many Madison county people, who have known her from birth. Mrs. Eyerly, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Griswold, was a bride of four months ago, her husband being Lieut. Roscoe Eyerly of Earlham stationed at Fort Snelling. Two months ago, he was transferred to Camp Devens at Ayer, Mass. She visited here at that time, then went east to meet her husband. She was taken ill, her death occurring after a brief illness from pneumonia. A telegram Friday morning summoned her parents east because of her critical condition. Preparations for the journey ceased at noon with the news of her death.

Mrs. Eyerly was born in Penn township, moving with her parents from there to Perry and Des Moines. For seven years, she had again lived in this county, graduating five years ago at Earlham; then taught school. Her refinement and charm of face and manner were but reflections of her inner character, for wherever she went, she won the affection and admiration of old and young.

This loss to the parents of their cherished daughter and to the young husband of his bride of so few weeks, has touched the hearts of the entire community with earnest sympathy.

Lieut. Eyerly arrived Monday morning and brief funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Griswold home in Winterset. Then the body was taken to Earlham for another service, followed by burial at Penn Center.
