Don Downs, St. Charles

Don Densil Downs, 85, of St. Charles, died June 19, 1994 at his son's home in rural St. Charles. Funeral services were today, June 22, 1994 at the St. Charles Parish Church. The Rev. Ed Poston of St. Charles officiated with burial at the St. Charles Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 5, 1908 near St. Charles to Frank and Zella (Sankey) Downs. He married Merle B. Powell on May 21, 1932 in Bethany, Mo. He was a lifetime farmer and resident of Madison County. He served on the St. Charles School Board for 15 years and was a member of the Model Lodge 315 A.F. and A.M. at St. Charles; member of Model Chapter 174 Order of the Easter Star and a member of the St. Charles Parish Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one sister; two brothers; and one granddaughter.

Surviving relatives include one daughter, Shirley Keeney and husband Robert of Prole; one son, David Downs and wife Pat of St. Charles; two brothers, Dwight Downs of St. Charles and Rex Downs of Boxholm; one sister, Florence Eichner of Van Meter; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

DON D. DOWNS

Don Densil Downs, son of Frank and Zella Sankey Downs, was born Sept. 5, 1908, near St. Charles in Madison County and died June 19, 1994, at his son’s home near St. Charles. He was 85.

He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1927. A lifelong resident of the Madison County area, Mr. Downs was a farmer. He had made his home with his son David and wife, Pat Downs for the past eight months.

He married Merle B. Powell on May 21, 1932, at Bethany, Mo. and the couple became the parents of two children.

Mr. Downs was a member of the St. Charles Parish Church at St. Charles, served on the St. Charles school board for over 15 years, a 50-member of Model Lodge No. 315 A.F.&A.M. at St. Charles and over a 50-year member of Model Chapter No. 174 Order of the Eastern Star at St. Charles.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Julie Kay; wife, Merle in 1983; sister Mary Crawford and two brothers, Carl and Cash Downs.

Mr. Downs is survived by his daughter, Shirley Keeney and her husband, Robert Keeney, of Prole; son, David Downs and his wife, Pat Downs, of St. Charles; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dwight Downs of St. Charles and Rex Downs of Boxholm; sister, Florence Eichner of Van Meter; as well as other relative and a host of friends.

Services for Mr. Downs were held June 22 at the St. Charles Parish Church in St. Charles, the Rev. Ed Poston officiating. The organist, Anne Johnson, accompanied Janet Downs as she sang In the Garden and How Great Thou Art.

Casket bearers were Greg Ayers, Steve Downs, Larry Downs, Vic Ayers, Randy Downs and Ryan Kenney. Masonic Rites were by Model Lodge No 315 A.F.& A.M. at St. Charles. Interment was in the St. Charles Cemetery with arrangements by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.
