Marvin Edward Downing, 84, of Winterset died of a respiratory ailment Sunday, March 1, 1998, at Madison County Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, March 4) at the First Christian Church in Winterset with Dr. Bobby G. Dickerson officiating. Burial will be at Morrisburg Cemetery in Guthrie County.

Marvin Downing was born March 16, 1913, in Guthrie County, Iowa to Charles and Dollie Kindred Downing. He married Mildred Vandervanter Sept. 24, 1932, at Bethany, Mo. He was a retired farmer and was also the night manager at the former Hay Loft Motel (Valley View Motel). He was a member of the Men's Garden Club and the First Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three brothers.

He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Hay (husband Maurice) of St. Charles; two sisters, Jeanne Barnts of Slater and Lavonne Kline of Iowa Falls; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Berneice Osler of Redfield.

Arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Memorials may be directed to the Winterset First Christian Church.
