William H. Doan

William H. Doan, son of Zacharias and Amelia Doan, was born Oct. 4, 1841 at Plainfield, Hendrix county, Indiana, and passed from this life at his home in Winterset, Iowa on the morning of April 28, 1921.

He was united in marriage to Armetta DeBord, Oct. 5, 1865, to which union eleven children were born, five of whom died in infancy. The six now living are Don M. Doan of Patterson, Mrs. Laura Sowash of Osceola, Mrs. Jessie Knowles of Oskaloosa, William A. Dean of Patterson, Frank Doan of Winterset and Mrs. Edna Clark of Barney.

In March 1867, at Union Chapel, he was converted and united with the church, living in the faith until the hour of his death. In this faith he was willing to pass out into the unseen, for only a few days ago he said that while he wanted to live and go back to the farm, and also help with the duties of the home, he was abundantly ready to go if his time had come. It has been said that the dying hour is the test of one's faith. His faith stood the test he was ready to go.

He came to Iowa with his father when a child, and has lived in that state ever since. When the Civil War broke out, he, together with four other young men, went to Keokuk and enlisted in the 17th Infantry, Company C, and served until the close of the war. He was engaged in 11 of the hardest fought battles of the war, and spent six months in the Andersonville prison. His three companions, who enlisted with him at Keokuk, never returned. At the close of the war he came to Madison county and has resided in the county up to the present time. He became a member of Pitzer Post of the G.A.R., and was loyal and true to the post, just as he had been in the army.

He leaves to mourn his departure, the widow, six children and six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one half brother and one half sister. The funeral was held from the Union Chapel Church, Dr. N. C. Carpenter, of the Winterset Church of Christ, delivering the sermon. The burial, with G.A.R. honors and rites was made in the Union Chapel cemetery.
