Lester Lewis Piatt, 101, died of a heart ailment, Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Funeral services were held Sept. 7 at First Christian Church in Winterset with interment at Winterset Cemetery. Military graveside rites were given by Winterset American Legion Post and Winterset Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. A Masonic service by Evening Star Post 43 AF & AM was also held.

Lester Piatt was born on Feb. 16, 1899 on a farm in Penn Township in Madison County to George A. and Lewrena Hennen Piatt. He was a life-long resident of Madison County where he farmed and house painted. He was a member of Early Chapel Christian Church and later transferred to the Winterset First Christian Church. He was an active member in both congregations.

He married Elsie Clampitt on June 8, 1920 and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 1990.

He was a World War I veteran of the U.S. Army and a past Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge Evening Star Post #43 AF & AM, where he was a member for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and two brothers.

Surviving are his two daughters, Phyllis Shaw and Hilda Crouse, both of West Des Moines; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren, a niece and newphews.
