Samuel L. Kauffman, prominent farmer of Jefferson township, died at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, Sunday, October 30th after a short illness with pneumonia. He was 75 years of age, and had lived on the home farm, since 1895. Mrs. Kauffman died on Decoration Day this year.
Mr. Kauffman was born in Wyanette, Illinois, September 25, 1857, and lived there with his parents until 1869. At that time the family came to Marion County, in a covered wagon and located near Knoxville. They resided there, until 1873, when they moved to a farm near Indianola. The rest of his boyhood and young manhood was spent there. He was married to Hannah Louise Dillard, January 29, 1880, and they spent seven years on a farm near Redfield, South Dakota. Since 1895 they have lived in Jefferson township.
The couple were the parents of four sons, and five daughters, all of whom survive him, except Guy, the oldest, who died in 1900 at the age of 18 years. He leaves David Kauffman of Panora, Herschel of Adel, Robert of Decatur, Mrs. Louise Scott of Arvada, Colorado, Mrs. Kathryn Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri, Mrs. Hazel Frederick of Des Moines, and Jeanette and Amy at home. He also leaves two brothers, A. I. Kauffman of Indianola, J. E. Kauffman of Gillette, Arkansas, and one sister, Mrs. Will Pritchard of Valley Junction. Twenty-one grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive him too.
The Rev. H. I. Olmstead, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ conducted his funeral services, which were held Tuesday, November first at two o’clock at the home. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery.
