Mr. Kauffman was born in Wyanette, Illinois, September 25, 1857, and lived there with his parents until 1869. The rest of his boyhood and young manhood was spent there. He was married to Hannah Louise Dillard, January 29, 1880, and they spent seven years on a farm near Redfield, South Dakota. Since 1895 they have lived in Jefferson township.

The couple were the parents of four sons, and five daughters, all of whom survive him, except Guy, the oldest, who died in 1900 at the age of 18 years. He leaves David Kauffman of Panora, Herschel of Adel, Robert of Decatur, Mrs. Louise Scott of Arvada, Colorado, Mrs. Kathryn Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri, Mrs. Hazel Frederick of Des Moines, and Jeanette and Amy at home.
