Elias Leonard "Ike" Gomez died of pneumonia Thursday, May 11, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were held May 15 at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart with burial at Calvary Cemetery there.

Elias Gomez was born March 11, 1914 in Guthrie Center to Lule and Christine E. (Jemming) Gomez. He was raised in the Guthrie and Adair County area and moved to Earlham in 1942. He was united in marriage with Marjorie Evelyn Miller on Oct. 3, 1942. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1992.

He farmed most of his life and ran a saddle and tack shop. He lived an active life and enjoyed attending livestock and horse sales.

He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church. He was a 4-H leader, president of the Dallas County Sheriff Posse, held office in many local saddle clubs and was emcee for many horse shows.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, James Gomez; grandsons, Brian Gomez and Thomas Wright; sisters, Caroline Reed and Mary Templeman, and brothers, James Gomez and Clarence Templeman.

Surviving are his wife, Marjorie; 10 sons, David and wife, Carol, of Shell Rock, Thomas and Paula, of Des Moines, Robert and Barb, of Fremont, Richard and Jean, of Olathe, Kan., Larry and Sue, of LaFeria, Texas, Timothy and Joan of Lorimor, Patrick of Earlham, William and companion, Kathy Phippen, of Dexter, Dennis and Sheryl, of Winterset, Jack and Diana, of Earlham; eight daughters, Jean Moll and husband, Terry, of Des Moines, Mary Gomez and companion, Lloyd Belding, of Pratt, Kan., Catherine Callahan and husband, Roger of Earlham, Janet Taylor and husband, Greg, of Earlham, Cindy Boucher and husband, Allen, of Des Moines, Margaret Tiernan and husband, Eric, of Stuart, Joyce Rasmussen and husband, David of Jefferson, and Barbara Boss and husband, David, of Stuart; 47 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Johnnie Gomez of Stuart, Joe and Wilma, of Clarkesville, Georgia, Carl and Virginia, of Des Moines and sisters, Elizabeth Edwards of Davenport, and Agnes Keese of Greenfield.
