St. Charles, March 10 – Mrs. C. E. Downs of St. Charles was found dead, by her son, Kenneth Downs, last Friday afternoon, March 6th, as he returned from work. Mrs. Bessie Downs who was 54 years of age, was a granddaughter of a pioneer, Joel Clanton, who settled near St. Charles, May 1846.
Heart trouble was said to be the cause of her death. Funeral services will be held as soon as a son, who is in the navy, can come here.

The funeral of Mrs. Bessie Downs who died Friday evening the sixth, was held at the Methodist church last Wednesday afternoon at two conducted by Rev. L. R. Gans, former pastor of the Church of Christ, assisted by Rev. H. S. Mitchell of the Methodist church. The funeral was deferred on account of a son who is in the navy, whom they telegraphed and in reply he stated he would come if possible. They received no further word so on Wednesday she was laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery.
A very large concourse of relatives and friends came to pay their last respects to one who was such a good and true friend and neighbor
