Page 4Milton Abram Smith Dies
Milton Abram Smith, a pioneer resident of the Earlham community died at his home in Earlham, Saturday, August 8, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Smith was born near Pine Plains, New York, July 23, 1850, a son of Abram and Anna Smith. He lived with his parents on a farm near Ancram, New York, until he was nine years of age. At that time his mother died and he lived with relatives in the same community until his marriage. On January 14, 1873 he was married to Elizabeth Tanner. In 1876 they moved to Chicago, where they resided for a few months, and they then came to the farm south of Earlham, where they made their home, for 37 years. In 1917 he and Mrs. Smith and their daughter Pearl moved to Earlham, where they have since resided.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith were the parents of eight children, all of whom survive them, with the exception of a son, Claude, who died in infancy. The ones surviving him are his widow, and W. T. of Dexter, Fred of Holcomb, Kansas, Ace, Clarence, Chester, Raymond and Pearl of Earlham. He also leaves 22 grandchildren.
The funeral was held Sunday, August 9th, at the home, with Rev. McEldowney in charge, with Rev. Hastie, pastor of the Early Chapel assisting. A male quartette composed of Scott Schifflet, Morris McEldowney, George Mills and Mervyn McLennan furnished the music, and six grandsons acted as pall bearers. Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.

Thursday, August 13, 1931Milton Abram Smith, son of Abram and Ann Smith, was born July 24th, 1850, near Pine Plains, New York, and died August 8th, 1931, at the age of 81 years and 14 days.
He lived with his parents, on a farm, near Ancram, New York, until he was nine years old. At that time his mother died, and he lived with relatives in the same community until his marriage.
On January 14th, 1873, he married Elizabeth Tanner. They lived on a farm near Ancram, New York for three years, then moved to Chicago for a few months and later to the farm south of Earlham, Iowa, where they lived for 37 years.
In 1917 Mr. Smith moved with his wife and daughter Pearl to Earlham, where he has lived until the time of his death.
To Mr. and Mrs. Smith were born eight children, all of whom are living except one son, Claudie, who died in infancy. Those who survive Mr. Smith are his wife, seven children, W. T. of Dexter; Fred, of Holcombe, Kansas; Asa, Clarence, Chester, Raymond and Pearl, of Earlham, twenty-two grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Rev. McElodwney officiated at the service assisted by Rev. Hastie of the Early Chapel Church. The remains were laid to rest in the Penn Center Cemetery.
