ROBERT E. CARTER

Robert E. Carter passed away at the Mercy hospital, Des Moines, aged 70 years. Mr. Carter was an old resident of this community and was a man who had many friends. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved relatives in this hour of sorrow.

Robert E., son of Peter and Parthena Blair Carter, was born in Glasgow, Scott county, Illinois, October 2, 1860. He moved with his parents to Madison county, Iowa, at the age of two and a half years, and grew to manhood on what is known as the Peter Carter farm, about two miles from Blair Chapel church.

He was united in marriage with Sarah Ellen Chadd, January, 1882, by Albert Walkup, Justice of the Peace. To this union were born four children: Jennie, Sam, Eliza and Frank.

Robert E. was converted and united with the Blair Chapel church in the early eighties and was baptized in Clanton Creek near the home place; Rev. Mr. Burch was the minister. He never moved his membership from this place. He enjoyed living to please God. He believed in the hereafter and the eternal home in heaven.

He moved with his family to Missouri in 1901, living there till two years ago. About a year since, he bought and moved on his brother, Alex’s, farm, where he was enjoying his home, owing to the former owner and having his old friends and relatives close to him again.

His health has been poorly for the last four years, but seemed to be improved somewhat until about ten days ago, when he caught cold and, with this and his old ailment, his sufferings became intense. The attending physician, Dr. Sayre, advised hurrying him to Mercy hospital, Des Moines, where he was taken Wednesday morning. Everything was done that could be, but death came at 11:10 Thursday morning, January 15, 1931.

While at the hospital, he was conscious part of the time and told members of the family that he was ready; that he was not afraid to die and that God is good. “I know I have to go. Don’t cry.” And he expressed a wish as to the manner of life they should live and also as to plans to carry out after he had passed on.

Mrs. Carter and daughter, Eliza, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Carter were at his bedside, when the end came. He leaves behind to mourn their loss, two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Smith and Mrs. Eliza McClelland, of Centerville, Iowa, and two sons, Sam and Frank, of Missouri, seven grand-children, two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Breeding and Mrs. Eliza Haynes, and one brother, J. G. …(missing information)… children, Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, and Mrs. Eliza McClelland, of Centerville, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Carter, of Harrisonville, and Frank Carter, of Milo, Mo.; Mrs. Maggie Fife and daughter, Margaret, of Omaha, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Oliver and son, of Colfax; Wm.
